With regards to my process, well…..actually, I didn’t have anything specific in mind before starting out.  I definitely didn’t want to do anything “sweet” or “adoring of Barbie”.  I was thinking of turning Barbie into a Crone by chopping off her breasts and then, sculpting in sagging tits, a round flabby belly, big thighs, flabby arms etc.  but, realized that it would be too time consuming.  I had also thought that Barbie’s face always reminded me of a fish or a bird.  So,  I think in the end, I created a Barbie fish/bird with a face & eyes that have a “skeleton look”.  So……..I don’t know…………is my Barbie a Fish/Bird Banshee/Crone? Who knows?

Her name is Janet and this is her story behind her creation:

I had a vague idea of combining the Barbie body with an animal head and maybe other body parts. I also have been reading a biography of Cleopatra which debunks the standard (male) historian view that she achieved and maintained her considerable power only through sexual means, and argues that not only was she very charismatic and charming but she was highly intelligent, politically savvy and a superb manager. So I wanted an image that was sensual and powerful at the same time. I was hesitant about putting the seahorse tail on her as a huge penis at first, but you really helped me go ahead and do it, and now I love it!

I especially thank you for encouraging me to add the tail, with such good humor, because it helped me push aside some internal barriers about what I allow myself to express in my work. Self-censoring can be a problem in creating art!

Her name is Mitzi and this is her story behind her creation:

The name of my creation is Vagina Dentatta. I started with wanting to do a kind of Yin/Yang, using a replica of my own paint horse I had as child. I added a little dappled filly and a Barbie wearing a black lace sexy purple dress. The vagina biting head seemed to come last as female sexual power that can stimulate or devour. My first intention had been to have Barbie crawling with spiders but when I found the Giant Ant. She , the ant, seemed perfect to fit on Barbies wild hair as helmet with a spray of golden CHI energy bursting out of Barbie, the daughter,  top Chakra. The web that weaves them all together, mare, daughter and filly is black. It is referencing the web from a Giant Black Spider, like the one that helped my mother to pass away. The net symbolized the bonding of mother to daughter to mother and on in to infinity, round and round we circle, one onto the other forever.

New Artwork: Drew Barrymore Peacock, Hookah Barbie

March 3, 2011

Like Swan Barbie from ‘Swan Lake’ we have a Peacock Barbie Celebrity, Drew Barrymore! She is looking lovelier than ever transformed into a beautiful golden peacock, which matches her golden spirit. Her eyes have a brownish gold shadow with eyeliner, and on her lips she uses a pink lipstick. Her hair is in a casual but formal updo, which matches her golden peacock feather tails. She is also wearing gold gem hanging earrings with a pearl shaped base. As you can see she is not just an average, ordinary peacock.

LaVonne’s “Cleopatra” collars now on Etsy

February 28, 2011

LaVonne made these beautiful beaded “Cleopatra” collars years ago but just recently unpacked them, photographed them, and added all 19 of them to her Etsy shop! These pieces are so striking and versatile—you can pair them with a cocktail dress for date night or with solid leggings and and an oversized shirt to make a drab outfit completely fab!

Each collar is made from leather or ultra suede with a mixture of seed beads and stone cabochons, and accented with various metal and stone components. Each collar comes with a packet of extra beads. A Cleopatra collar makes a great gift for that special diva in your life. These pieces beg for attention when taken out on the town so that she doesn’t have to!

Michael Vick “I’m Sorry”
#5809, $150.00
9” x 10” x 16”
Have you heard of the famous football player who made dogs fight for their lives, just for the money? Well let me introduce you to Michael Vick. He is kneeled over a pitbull statue, which says Rest In Peace on the side, with daises in his hand and around the statue. When you commit a crime you do the time, well in his case he did more than time – he actually came out a “changed man.” Is this what they mean when they say ‘all for the love of money’?

The Death of Leonard Cohen series for Richard McGraw

December 28, 2010

One day singer/songwriter Richard McGraw saw my website. A day or two later he was playing with his nieces and their barbie dolls and later that night he had a dream about the death of his friend, Leonard Cohen.

The dream took place with Leonard being on stage, in the hospital, at his funeral, and at his cremation. In the dream, all the characters were Barbie and Ken dolls. The next morning Richard wrote a song about it and, wanting to have a video re-enactment to go along with the music, he contacted me to see if I could create the artwork for his video.

I agreed and created four dioramas that will be used for the eight scenes in the video. Included in the dioramas are 34 or 35 OOAK Barbie dolls in all:

  • Three Leonard Cohen dolls: young, old and dead
  • Three Richard McGraw dolls: 2 young, 1 old
  • Five celebrities: Burt Reynolds, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Bono, Rebecca DeMorney
  • Family and others: Mother, Wife, Daughter, Son, Monk, 2 back up singers/nurses, 2 hippie back up singers, 2 drummers, and 12 funeral attendees
