The Death of Leonard Cohen series for Richard McGraw

December 28, 2010

One day singer/songwriter Richard McGraw saw my website. A day or two later he was playing with his nieces and their barbie dolls and later that night he had a dream about the death of his friend, Leonard Cohen.

The dream took place with Leonard being on stage, in the hospital, at his funeral, and at his cremation. In the dream, all the characters were Barbie and Ken dolls. The next morning Richard wrote a song about it and, wanting to have a video re-enactment to go along with the music, he contacted me to see if I could create the artwork for his video.

I agreed and created four dioramas that will be used for the eight scenes in the video. Included in the dioramas are 34 or 35 OOAK Barbie dolls in all:

  • Three Leonard Cohen dolls: young, old and dead
  • Three Richard McGraw dolls: 2 young, 1 old
  • Five celebrities: Burt Reynolds, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Bono, Rebecca DeMorney
  • Family and others: Mother, Wife, Daughter, Son, Monk, 2 back up singers/nurses, 2 hippie back up singers, 2 drummers, and 12 funeral attendees
